The United States is a divided nation politically. Last year’s presidential election, recent events in Charlottesville, and other events have caused deep and destructive rifts among Americans.

These sentiments are permeating all aspects of life, including the workplace.

When discussions and conversations occur about hot button topics, a workplace can become an uncomfortable place to be. Employees may feel uncomfortable in their workplaces because derogatory statements are being made about immigrants, homosexuals, transgender individuals and other members of protected classes.

Other forms of harassment and discrimination may be taking place, prompted by political happenings in the United States.

In these situations, management should step in, act neutrally, and take action. Unfortunately, this does not always happen. Sometimes, the actions of employers can make the situation worse – they may not take action or they may contribute to the problem. In some cases, improper personnel actions are taking place.

Employees should be aware of their legal rights. Employees have a right to work in a workplace that is free from all forms of discrimination and harassment.
